Welcome Friends and Neighbors!

Hello! I’m Angie Singler, a St Louis City Democratic Candidate for the 25th Ward Board of Aldermen. Welcome to my website!
I’ve been proud to call the 25th Ward my home for 25 years. It’s here that my husband and I raised our three children, we developed long-lasting friendships, and I learned what it takes to be an important part of our community.
In recent years we have seen our community change right in front of our eyes. Trash litters our streets and parks, crime has increased, and property owners have gotten a free pass on the state of their property and tenants. Now this election isn’t about pointing fingers or casting blame, this election is an opportunity; it’s a chance to look towards a whole new generation of leadership, and change the way things are done.
I invite you to visit my “PRIORITIES” page and browse around this website to learn a little more about how and why I would like to be your partner and advocate in city hall fighting for the issues that we all care about.
We need a change in the Dutchtown and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods now more than ever! And I’m ready to take an active role in restoring what once was the stable 25th ward. I am Angie Singler, and I humbly ask for your vote on March 3rd, 2009…so we can truly, “reconnect our community!”
St. Mary’s High School NEW Development Plans!
St. Mary’s High School is an exceptional all-male Catholic high school located right here in the 25th Ward. Located at 4701 South Grand (near Grand and Itaska), St. Mary’s educates approximately 400 boys annually and has granted over 11,000 diplomas to students since it first opened its doors in 1931. Former Alumni include St. Louis City Mayor Francis G. Slay and my two sons, Dan and Tim Singler!
Recently, School President Rev. Mitchell Doyen unveiled the new and exciting development plans for St. Mary’s High School at both the Dutchtown South Community Corporation General Meeting on November 3, 2008 as well as at our local Neighborhood Association meeting in the Resurrection School Building on Tuesday November 11, 2008. There was also a story written about the plans at the St. Louis Business Journal here.
St. Mary’s acquired the property and 164-unit apartment complex to the West of the school and has plans to construct a baseball field and tennis courts on the property. All of the tenants in the apartments have been relocated and demolition should begin by the end of November once the asbestos abatement has been completed. Demolition should take between 6-8 weeks. Father Mitch announced that by June 30, 2009 the site should start looking like a ball field, and will be available for use once grass starts growing and other improvements are added. Plans also include converting the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys into a “South Side Campus” and creating a Center for Applied Sciences to teach AC Electricity and add HVAC in the Fall of 2009.
St. Mary’s has also acquired Beckerle Park located at Spring and Itaska and plans to make improvements to that area as well! Once construction is complete, local organized community groups will be able to sign-up to use the field!
Go Dragons!
Fall Leaves Curb Pick Up Starting Nov. 19th
In case the “Yard Waste” dumpster bins get full with leaves this time of year, the St. Louis City Refuse Division is offering curb side pick-up for your fall leaves starting November 19, 2008!
While many neighborhoods have street leaf pick-up (where you rake your leaves into the street and the City drives by and vacuums them up), in Ward 25, you need to call the refuse Division at 353-8877 (no earlier than 8am) to give them your home address a few days before you want the City to come by and pick up your leaves from the curb. Leaves must be in a brown bag or a plastic bag to be picked up. Pick-up days are usually on Wednesday, so it is best to call the Refuse division on Monday or Tuesday to get on their schedule.
Invest in our Ward…
When I was running errands this weekend, I stopped and took a few pictures of improvements that many of us see everyday in other neighborhoods…improvements that would be great right here in the 25th Ward.
Take for example the newspaper bins near Kingshighway and Chippewa:

The decorative holder is a nice way to keep all of the separate newspaper bins together. It even advertises the name of the area, “South Town,” to help identify the area.
Along Kingshighway, there are nice benches along the sidewalks, bike racks near bus stops, entryways to businesses, and even banners on light posts that further identify the area:

All of theses ideas create an inviting atmosphere for both new neighbors, business, and guests! I love the ideas of community art and murals as well as white holiday lights at the top of businesses during the evening hours (like they have along Grand Avenue in the Tower Grove Neighborhood). Creating “streetscape” plans like Downtown Dutchtown Business Association is developing for Meramec Street and the Lawrence Group is developing for Grand Avenue from Gravois to Chippewa are critical to bringing new businesses and neighbors to our Ward. These are all the types of ideas and investments that I would advocate for and allocate Ward improvement funds to if I have the opportunity to serve as Alderwoman. Please be on the lookout for a detailed “plan” on how we can bring about some of these positive changes soon.
New Polling Ability!
If elected to represent our Ward, I would like to utilize this website, www.ward25.com, as a hub of information for the 25th Ward in order to keep our community connected. This includes having posts on what is happening both at City Hall and around our community. While I will always be available via phone, cell phone, email, text message, and snail mail, I’d also like to be available via this website.
I have added a new polling feature, that will allow you to tell me your thoughts with the quick push of a button…check this one out just for fun:
Obama-Biden on Tuesday!
Remember to Vote! I am really excited about this Presidential election on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, and I am sure you are too! Missouri is a really important State, so please not only remember to vote, but drag a couple of people with you to the polls.
A couple weeks ago, I met up with some friends of mine and joined the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) Local 110 to canvas for Obama and Biden. The energy and enthusiasm of the Union members was AWESOME!
We have a chance to directly participate in making history and sending Barack Obama and Joe Biden to the White House on Tuesday….what an exciting time! Remember to Vote!
…Officially Announces Candidacy for Alderwoman
Last night I officially announced my candidacy for Alderwoman of the 25th Ward for the St. Louis City Board of Aldermen at the “25th Ward Regular Democratic Club Meeting” held at the Resurrection School Building. While I had already officially spoken with my friend and Incumbent, Dorothy Kirner, as well as the Committeeman of the Democratic Club about my intentions to run, last night was my first “official” announcement! It was great to be bombarded with supportive neighbors after the political club meeting was over and hear that they are enthusiastic about my candidacy and about their desire for positive changes for the 25th Ward!
I want to let you all know that I am excited about the next 4 months. I am looking forward to staying positive and continuing to devote my energy towards improving our Ward! While there is a lot of work ahead, March 3, 2009 will be here before we all know it. It is truly time to “reconnect our community!”

Amberg Park Clean Up Day!
This weekend was the first Amberg Park Clean Up Day at Amberg Park located at Keokuk and Gustine! It was great to see so many neighbors come out to clean-up our park and really start to turn it around. The park has had problems with litter, drinking, and some violence in the past, so it was refreshing to come together as a community to clean it up. Sometimes it takes the community to come together and unite…to work around a common issue and start bridging the gap from issues and complaints to action. One neighbor mentioned that he was tired of getting no response from elected and city officials on the trash problems at the park and so he called the City Parks Department and requested more trash cans for the park. They arrived the next day. If I recieve the honor of being elected Alderwoman of the 25th Ward, I will not only work beside you in events like the Amberg Park Clean Up Day, but I will also listen to your issues and ideas and make sure that I follow through with you. Take a look at my “priorities” page to learn more about how I plan on being a more accessible and transparent elected official.
Special thanks to Ryan and Sara Dannan organized the event and even created a website devoted to our neighborhood park here.
Steve Patterson, blogger of urbanreviewstl.com, wrote a nice post on the event that you can read and see more pictures here.
Downtown Dutchtown (East Grand) Clean-Up
The second Dutchtown Neighborhood “Tidy Bowl” Day was recently held on October 11, 2008 in efforts to help clean-up and beautify the sidewalks and streets of downtown Dutchtwon (near Meramec Street and Virginia Avenue).
I stopped by with a few friends and neighbors to get my hands pretty dirty in helping to remove weeds from sidewalk cracks and around the tree wells, as well as pick up trash and sweep dirt that has collected in the area.
We all met the organizer of this years Downtown Dutchtown Business Association “Tidy Bowl,” Shane Cohn, at the Urban Eats Cafe and Bakery at 3301 Meramec Street, divvied up sections of Meramec Street, and went to work. It was really great to see some young volunteers and other neighbors come together to help make our neighborhood a better place to live!
